How do I use AOL services through CAL Internet Services?

Connect to the CAL Internet Services, Inc. Web site. You are now directly connected to the Internet and are free to use Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc. While you are connected to the CALIS Web site, launch AOL's software.

On AOL's sign-on page, click on "Set Up." Click on "Edit Location." In the first try and second try columns, your network is probably set to AOLnet. Click on the network pull-down and select TCP/IP. This configures your AOL software to use your CAL Internet Services connection instead of making its own modem connection to an AOL modem. Click on "Save" and then OK to return to the sign-on screen. Now sign onto AOL as you always do. You will not hear any modem dialing (remember you are already connected to CALIS). You will now be accessing AOL via the Internet. From now on when you want to go online, connect to CALIS, then launch AOL, Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.

Once you become comfortable with accessing AOL via CAL Internet Services, you will want to modify your billing arrangement with AOL. Go to to AOL keyword "byoa" (= Bring Your Own Access). If you are now accessing AOL exclusively via CALIS, you can reduce your AOL monthly rate to only $9.95/month. This gives you unlimited usage of AOL as a "destination" from the Internet. You will no longer being using AOL's modems/infrastructure to reach AOL. You may also find that your access to AOL via CALIS may even be faster than via the AOL connection.

What is the V.92 modem standard?

CALIS dial-up service supports V.92. With V.92, your dial-up experience is improved with exciting new features, including Modem On-Hold, Quick Connect, and V.44 Compression. Modem On-Hold enables subscribers who have Call Waiting to suspend their Internet connection in order to make and receive voice phone calls over the same dial-up connection without having to logout and re-logon to the Internet. Quick Connect reduces the time it takes to connect to the Internet (handshaking) by 30 to 50% by remembering the previous settings negotiated when dialing the same telephone number. V.44 Compression increases the overall throughput of a user's dial-up connection, accelerating the download speeds of text-based Web pages by up to 60 percent.
