How do I manage my Web site
using the CALIS Web hosting control panel?
|
|
Easily
manage your domain needs and get information about
your account with our Web
hosting control panel.
Change your password
Manage your
e-mail addresses
Transfer (FTP) your
HTML files
Review your Web
site traffic and statistics
View your e-mails
on the Web
View your account information such
as:
1) disk space
2) data transfer
3) number of e-mails, etc.
In order to get to the CALIS Web hosting control
panel, go to the CALIS home page and click on "Utilities"
and click on the "Web hosting control panel"
button (or http://www.calis.com/Webadmin.html).
Enter your domain name (e.g. yourname.com) and your
password.

Change Password: You
can change the password for your account by clicking
on the "Change Password" icon. Provide your
old and new password information on the form.
Note: you need to exit the Web hosting control panel
and re-enter after you change your password.
E-mail Manager: You
can get a report of your current e-mails and add/delete
e-mails for your service by clicking on the "E-Mail
Manager" icon. The Main Menu screen gives you
the following options: (Note: In order to create a
new e-mail address, you need to first "Add E-Mail
Account" and then "Add E-Mail Alias"
unless you have an existing e-mail account).
- Check E-Mail: This option will generate a
report of all the e-mail accounts and e-mail aliases
for your service.
- Add E-Mail Account: This option will let
you add an e-mail account for your service. You must
provide an e-mail account (up to 16 characters). Your
choice of the e-mail account might not be available
on our system, and you might have to choose a different
e-mail account. As a suggestion, use the first 3 letter
of your domain name as a prefix to your e-mail account
(i.e. if your domain name is mydomain.com and want
to add myuser account, use mydmyuser). You must provide
a password that is more than 5 and less than 8 alphanumeric
characters. You must also provide the first name and
the last name for the e-mail user.
- Add E-Mail Alias: This option will let you
add your desired e-mail address at your domain. You
must provide the e-mail address (myuser@mydomain.com)
and the actual e-mail account receiving the e-mail
(can be a valid e-mail account on CAL Internet Services
or an e-mail account on some other domain).
- Delete E-Mail Alias: This option will let
you delete e-mail aliases for your service. You will
see a list of your current e-mail aliases and the
total number of e-mail aliases for your service. You
can choose the entry that you want to delete, and
press on the "Delete" button.
Once you press on the "Add" or "Delete"
buttons, you will get a confirmation message on top
of your screen. If the operation was successful, the
confirmation message will be displayed in green color.
If the operation failed, the confirmation message
will be displayed in red.
Note: It is very important to know the difference
between e-mail account and e-mail alias. Think of
an e-mail account as mapping 1:1 to users who need
to have e-mail address. If your company has three
employees who need access to e-mail address, set up
three e-mail accounts and three e-mail aliases. You
can also use the e-mail aliases for different "departments"
or "functional groups" you want to expose
to people who view your Web site. Common e-mail alias
names are "info", "sales", "Webmaster",
"support" and "orders". Then for
each e-mail alias decide which e-mail account will
handle the virtual alias function (i.e. info@youdomain.com
is handled by employee1 going to employee1 e-mail
account). This method can help your company appear
to be much larger than it really is and also lets
you start small and grow bigger without altering the
e-mail addresses that you have published to your customers.
FTP: You can upload
your files (Web pages) to our server by clicking on
the FTP icon. After you get the FTP window, simply
drag and drop the files from your hard drive to the
FTP window.
View Statistics: You can
view your Web site traffic and statistics by clicking
on the "View Statistics" icon. The CALIS
Analyzer Tool help you monitor the traffic to your
Web site. This tool provides vital information to
you such as: How many hits you get on a daily basis
and the Web sites that your hits are coming from.
Web Mail : You can access
your e-mail using a Web browser by clicking on the
Web Mail icon. Enter your username and password to
login. Once logged in, you can use the normal e-mail
features such as read your e-mails, reply to your
e-mails, send attachments, etc. This feature is useful
for people who are away from the computer that they
usually retrieve their e-mail on while traveling.

How do I move my Web pages to
CALIS from another provider ?
|
|
In order to transfer your Web pages from existing
provider to CALIS, you need to download your HTML
files to your computer. This requires you to know
your existing provider's ftp server, username and
password. Once you download your files to your computer,
you can upload your pages to CALIS server.
By using an FTP program such as WS_FTP,
you can move your files from any server to your local
computer and vice versa. The WS_FTP software program
can be obtained in two ways. The WS_FTP
program can be found under WIN32_UTIL/Wsftp directory
of the installation CD provided by CALIS, or can be
downloaded from the Internet (www.download.com).
Once WS_FTP is installed, your first
step should be to download the latest copy of your
Web pages to your personal computer. To do this open
the WS_FTP program and enter the following
information as shown in the picture below:
Host
Name: Get the hostname from your Web hosting provider
(e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com).
User ID: Your account name with your Web hosting provider.
Password:
Password for this account.

Once connected, you will see all the directories and
files on your computer in the left-hand pane of the
window (local system). You will see all the directories
and files on your existing server in the right-hand
pane of the window (remote system).
- Select the files and/or directories that needs to
be downloaded in the right-hand pane (remote system)
and move it into appropriate directory in your local
system using the left arrow button in the middle.
-
Similarly, to upload files from your local system
to remote system, use the right arrow button. Now,
you are ready to transfer your files from your local
machine to CALIS server. Please refer to the next
question "How do I Publish my Web site on
the Net?" for Instructions.

How do I publish my Web site on
the Internet?
|
|
To publish your Web site to the Internet, you must
first transfer it from your computer (upload) to the
CAL Internet Services server.
a) CALIS Web hosting control panel (WHCP) - Please
refer to the "FTP" section of the CALIS
Web hosting control panel (WHCP) instruction for
the preferred method of publishing your Web site to
the Internet.
b)
Publish Web Pages Using File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
- In order to upload your files, you can use a FTP
program such as ws_ftp. The FTP software allows you
to transfer your files to the CALIS server. The WS
FTP software program can be obtained in two ways.
The ws_ftp program can be found under WIN32_UTIL/Wsftp
directory of the installation CD provided by CALIS
or can be downloaded from the Internet (www.download.com).
Once ws_ftp is installed, set up a new profile by
entering a Profile Name, "ftp.calis.com"
as Host Name, your username for User ID, and your
password.
Then, simply make the connection and change the directory
on the server to "public_html" and on your
machine to where your files reside. Now, you are ready
to transfer your files from your local machine to
CALIS server. Please note that the username, password,
and file names are all case-sensitive.

c) Publish Web Pages Using Microsoft® FrontPage
Extension (HTTP) - Another way to publish files
to your Web site is to use Microsoft FrontPage. Make
sure FrontPage server extensions are installed on
the Web server for your service.
Before you publish your Web, you can specify which
pages you want to publish. Then, when you publish
your Web, you have the following options:
- Publish only the files that have changed.
- Publish all files, except those that have been marked
don't publish.
- Publish subWebs, if the current Web has subWebs.
- Publish the Web using a secure (SSL) connection.
Follow the following steps after starting Front Page
2000 and opening the Web site on your local machine.
- On the "File" menu, click "Publish
Web."
- Click "Options" to expand the list
of options.
- Specify whether you want to publish only pages that
have changed or all pages.
- To publish subWebs, select the "Include
subWebs" check box.
- To publish using a secure connection, select the
"Secure connection required (SSL)"
check box. Your destination Web server must support
SSL for this feature to work.
- In the "Specify the location to publish
your Web to" box, type the location of a
Web server, click the arrow to select a location to
which you have published before, or click "Browse"
to find the publishing location.
- Click Publish.

What is the domain transfer procedure?
|
|
If you have an existing domain, CAL Internet Services,
Inc. initiates the domain transfer (DNS changes) when
you sign up for any of our Web hosting packages. If
you have username and password for your domain account,
you need to provide this information at the time of
sign up. Domain transfer requests must be confirmed
by the owner of the domain (administrative contact).
There are two different cases to confirm the domain
transfer:
1) The e-mail address for administrative contact
of your domain is valid.
If the contact e-mail is valid and operable, the e-mails
from Network Solutions will be sent to the administrative
contact of the domain. The contact must respond to
the e-mails received from Network Solutions to confirm
the domain transfer changes.
2) The e-mail address for administrative contact
for your domain is invalid.
If the administrative contact information for your
domain is not valid (the e-mail address), you need
to fax the domain transfer request on company letterhead
to Network Solutions. Detailed instruction on how
to fax the domain transfer request will be provided
by CAL Internet Services, Inc.
Note : In most cases, domains that are transferred
using the username and password don't require confirmation
from the administrative contact. Also note that the
domains that require username and password to transfer,
can't be transferred without this information. So,
it's domain owners' responsibility to transfer the
domain.
You can follow-up on the status of your domain transfer
changes by calling Network Solutions at one of the
following numbers: 1.888.642-9675 - 1.800.779.1710
- 1.703.742.4777
Following is the DNS and technical contact information:
Primary DNS: ns3.calis.com
69.19.196.3
Secondary DNS: ns4.calis.com
69.19.196.4
Technical Contact: FJ1696

to the Perl executable on CALIS server is at "/usr/bin/perl".
If your CGI script requires the path to the sendmail
executable, use "/usr/sbin/sendmail" to
access the sendmail executable on CALIS server.
Note: Make sure that you use the 'chmod
+x scriptname' command to make your script executable
after uploading your CGI script to our server.
